So far, we’ve seen phonebanking, posters, stickers, and a table for Obama. But where are the Students for Hillary? Where have they been all day?

At the polls, I spoke to Mollie Stein, a Barnard sophomore who had been campaigning for Hillary earlier today. She acknowledged the lack of visibility on campus, saying “there hasn’t been that much for Hillary — but just from talking to people, a lot of them are voting for her.” Stein said that from what she has seen, the election in New York “seems like it could go either way,” though she hopes Hillary wins because “she needs to win New York.”

After talking to Stein, I spoke with Columbia senior Anna Durrett, the founder of Students for Hillary on campus. She said that in the past few weeks, Students for Hillary has been phonebanking and will conduct visibility efforts on campus today.

Durrett was optimistic about Hillary’s chances in the state, saying that, “It’s Clinton country — she has been an incredibly good senator and people see that.” She thought that an Obama win in New York was “unlikely.” Durrett began working for Hillary during her senate re-election campaign, and has supported her because of her experience and bipartisan attitude. “2008 is not a year in which we’re making a great country greater,” she said. “We’re picking up the pieces from the past eight years.” Durrett thought Hillary was the candidate necessary to accomplish this.

Plus, she added, “I’m a girl. I want to see a woman in [the White House].”

We’re going to keep looking around campus — hopefully we’ll find more of the visibility efforts that Durrett mentioned.
