Hillary speaks to AFL-CIO in Center City

Emily Schultheis

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is a lot like Rocky Balboa — or so she said in a speech to the AFL-CIO downtown this morning.

Responding to the calls for Clinton to drop out of the race in order to end the Democratic primary, Clinton used the famous scene at the Philadelphia Museum of Art as an analogy for her continued fight for the nomination: “Could you imagine if Rocky Balboa had gotten half way up those Art Museum steps and said, ‘Well, I guess that’s about far enough?’”

“Let me tell you something, when it comes to finishing the fight, Rocky and I have a lot in common,” she continued. “I never quit. I never give up. And neither do the American people.”

Clinton delivered her address at the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO Convention and focused largely on economic issues, particularly the creation of new jobs for Americans.

In addition to her “Rocky” comments, Clinton proposed a plan to create 3 million jobs over 10 years in improving the U.S. infrastructure, citing the I-95 closing several weeks ago as an example of the need for such a program. “We’re trying to run today’s economy on yesterday’s infrastructure — and we’re jeapardizing tomorrow’s prosperity. So I will rebuild America — by rebuilding, repairing, and modernizing our infrastructure.”

Clinton’s economic plans for improving America’s infrastructure also included a $10 billion Emergency Repair Fund, as well as a $1.5 billion annual increase in federal funding for public transit.
