Liveblogging the Democratic Debate — from a student’s perspective

Albert Sun

Update: Gibson: “How are you going to make the case to Super Delegates at the convention in Denver?” Well we’re back to electability.

Update: Affirmative action, a hot button issue, especially for students I think, and somewhere where our generation of Democrats doesn’t really agree with the mainstream.

Obama: “I don’t think it can be applied without looking at the whole person.” Should be for people who are locked out of opportunity. What exactly does that mean?

Clinton: “In favor of more student loan aid, not these outrageous student loans.” Cited a 28% interest rate. I don’t know anyone paying 28% but I suppose it could be possible, and it is true that student loans are very tough right now. Didn’t really answer the affirmative action question though.

Update: Obama is making a distinction between the individual right to own guns and the government’s right to regulate. He’s comparing it to zoning laws and property licensing. This is a huge issue for anyone in Philadelphia especially under Mayor Nutter, who’s been trying to pass more gun regulation for Philadelphia.

A few days ago, Nutter was on the Colbert Report talking about how Philadelphia’s gun issue was a local issue, but at the federal level, he could use some help with something like an assault weapons ban.

Does Clinton support the D.C. handgun ban. “What I support is sensible regulation that is consistent with the constitutional right to bear arms. I think a total ban might be found, by the courts to be unconstitutional.”

“What I favor is what works in New York. We have a set of rules in NYC and a totally different set of rules for the rest of the state.”

“For the federal government to have a blanket set of rules doesn’t make any sense.” Well that’s something of an answer.

Update: All this talk about how much hedge fund managers make. I think I can hear the Wharton students crying in fear of a Democrat getting elected because they all WANT to be a hedge fund manager making that much money.

Update: Great zinger by McCain in a video clip about the Dem’s raising taxes. “Have the audacity to raises taxes and hope people don’t mind!” Let’s see if they’re going to talk about the cost of college though. Taxes aren’t much of an issue for me, considering the refund I calculated on my taxes was exactly $3.

Update:Another question from a random person. “Why don’t you where the American flag Obama? WHY!?” Interestingly enough, Clinton isn’t wearing one tonight either.

Obama: “This is the kind of manufactured issue that distracts us from the real issues.”

Nearly 40 minutes in and still no issues of substance, just questions about campaign tactics and “blunders.”

Update: Stephanopoulos bringing the heat on Clinton now. “People don’t believe you’re trustworthy.” Sniper fire, Obama’s pastor, bitter blue collar voters, all the hot button issues.

Question from George Stephanopoulos for Obama.

Isn’t it wonderful that “love for America” can be quantified. Let’s hear some real issues. Talk to me about the student lending crisis.
