Penn for Hillary and Penn for Obama have nothing on these kids.
Today from about 3:00-3:30 p.m., a gaggle of kids from the after-school program at St. Mary’s (think the church next to the Tampons) marched on the Button, reminding students and passersby to vote today. They also shouted their support for their candidate of choice.
And the candidate whose captured the hearts and minds of these future voters?
Overwhelmingly, Barack Obama.
“My mom says he’s awesome,” said Lillian, aged 7.
Caleb, aged 6, said that people should vote for Obama “because he’s at the top.”
Echoed Zarraf, aged 9 1/2, “He’s just really cool.”
Mariella, aged 9, Kavya, aged 8, and Ellen, aged 9, have all clearly been paying attention to the news.
According to Kavya, people shouldn’t vote for Clinton because “what she says she might not do.” She added that Obama could better understand what poor people in America go through
And Mariella was as fervent as anyone supporting Obama on Penn’s campus. “He’s ready for change. We can all believe in his change,” she said, tightly clutching an Obama sign.
And Ellen echoed Mariella’s sentiments. “He has good changes,” she said, adding that her family would be supporting Obama today.
As these kids chanted “O-ba-ma!,” held “VOTE” signs and slid down the Button, one voice stood out among the Obama chants: John, aged 7 1/2, the lone Clinton supporter of the group. “They’re saying too much,” he said, looking at the rest of his group marching around the Button. “But I try to yell louder than them.”
Still, he thinks that people should “all vote if they want to.”
Jesse, one of their teachers, said that the kids normally aren’t politically active–”unless there’s an impetus,” like today’s primary.
And it’s clear that one candidate won’t be receiving their support down the road: When asked if they liked John McCain, not one hand out of about 12 went up.
Guess the youth really do lean liberal.
