The first problem which is disregarded when bandying about the $6 million figure, is that that figure is only an estimate and does not include the cost of rehabilitating and reinstalling the instrument, much less the cost of building a new hall or significantly remodelling an existing one in order to accommodate the instrument. U. of P. apparently had no need or desire to spend these monies, and U. of O. will be spending at least a few million dollars on organ restoration, remodeling the concert hall, and installing the organ. The instrument was listed in Organ Clearing House for most of a year, with no buyers found. It is not appropriate to try to sell an organ of this size and historical importance on EBay, as this would most likely result in its being broken up for parts. This way, it will be used regularly again for recitals and teaching, at a university with a long-established reputation for excellence in its music programs, especially its organ program, which has been recognized as one of our country's finest since at least the 1950's.
