When I first heard about Philadelphia’s carshare program, I thought it was only good for one thing:
But while the hyphy movement has faded, Philly CarShare is still going strong. Why? Part of the reason is that it’s perfect for college students.
I’m one of the program’s 30,000 members, and Philly CarShare has served me well in business and in pleasure.
When I signed up for the LSAT earlier this fall, the only test center still available was Cheney University out in Nowheresville, PA. Instead of praying to Yahweh for a perennially bankrupt public transport service to get me there in a timely fashion, I reserved a car for the day. It was there waiting for me bright and early, and in my very own backyard — Philly CarShare has a few parking spaces at 40th and Irving.
And when some friends and I wanted to take advantage of the warm weather while it lasted, we reserved a sweet ride and drove out to Ocean City. Fun times, ’til you check your wallet. Expect to drop about $100 on a weekend joyride with your friends.
Still, Philly CarShare is pretty sweet. It’s the perfect stress reliever for suburbanites who miss cruising through town in their parents’ car. It’s a solid alternative to the city’s mangy/broken public transportation system. And since half of the cars are hybrid, membership is just another feather in the fedora of our city’s tree-hugging, fair-trade-coffee-slurping hipster doofuses. As for me, I’m just waiting for a Philly CarShare schoolbus so I can do this:
