I’m sure you all remember the controversy that was stirred up across the nation in response to Islamo-Fascism Awareness week, or Terrorism Awareness Week as it was politically correctly re-dubbed here at Penn.
The president of the Muslim Student’s Association had it out with Bill O’Reilly, Santorum once again humiliated himself despite repeated attempts to sound like a legitimate politician, and we all were reminded of just how myopic some people’s world views really are.
At Dartmouth, this week is “Islam-Fashion Awareness Week.” It’s hard to believe that Al-Nur, the student group sponsoring the week, claims they don’t want “the event to be seen as a response to Islamo-Fascism week.”
After the jump: Hijabs, abayas and niqabs hit the runway.
Naturally, I was hoping for some advice on how to wear my head covering, or hijab fashionably and without violating the rules of the Qur’an, or perhaps some tips on how to cinch my abaya in just the right place. But none such tips were to be found.
The week’s purpose is to “raise awareness of Al-Nur and the Islamic community at large,” an estimable goal, on their part, but where does that leave the fashion-starved Muslims of Dartmouth?
In all seriousness, it’s quite ironic that the name “Islam-Fashion” was chosen for their awareness week. Considering that women, according to the Qur’an, are supposed to cover all that is not necessary (i.e., everything except face, hands and feet), not much fashion exists in Islamic societies. Of course, there is nothing wrong with following strict religious practices - after all, many pious believers of other religions also follow rules for dress - but there must be a line drawn when police are involved in mandating these rules, as in Saudi Arabia.
I’d like to see The WALK show some pieces that incorporate mustard-yellow hijabs during our own “Islam-Fashion Awareness Week,” a garment that is proudly worn by many Penn students. Those conservative pigs who came up with “Islamo-Fascism Awareness” need to be poked fun at a little.
I think a “walk-off” between two models in traditional religious garb, in the middle of College Green, would be a great way to make them squirm.
