What is this crowd of hungry Penn students doing in Huntsman on a Thursday night?
And no, they are not there just for the free pizza.
Who are we kidding? Of course they were there for the free pizza. But other stuff was going on as well.
As the fourth activity of Innovation Week, the keynote speaker of this event, entitled “Think Big” was Alan J. Cook (M&T ‘95). Cook’s claim to fame is his invention ScoopFree –- a self-cleaning litter box for cats that can operate untouched for up to several weeks at a time. A picture of a picture of the item is featured below.
Like a proud papa, Cook described the arduous journey he took to take his proud baby of a mechanical pooper-scooper from dream to reality. The speaker was funny, engaging, and likeable — all qualities he must surely have picked up after he graduated from the M&T program.
The crowd was light at first, but the room filled up eventually, as the event started only slightly late. Fortunately, business fraternity and co-sponsor of the event, DSP, sent their minions — I mean pledges — to help fill out the crowd.
From the smiles on the freshmen’s faces, I never would have guessed cat excrement would be such an interesting topic. However, when being sleep deprived and blatantly hazed in public have become realities you face every day, I imagine you begin to appreciate the finer things in life.
I’d say more, but my pizza is getting cold.
