Are you in the College? No, Annenberg.

Mike Tate

We’re into the name thing at Penn. That’s why we say we’re in Wharton, Nursing, the College, or Engineering.

Now that discussion of the B-FLAT minor for College students has unleashed Wharton’s enmity towards the College, creating a fear of dilution due to the participation of liberal arts students, Dennis DeTurck, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, rushed to defend the proposed idea in a recent DP:

It is regrettable that Friday’s article gave the impression that there is a fully-formed “program” that the College is “pushing,” or that it is a point of contention between the College and Wharton.

I’m glad Dean DeTurck clarified.

Anyway, this is the perfect time to rip the fissure between schools open wider with my true opinion of being a Communication major.

Let’s face it: the Annenberg School for Communication is the Wharton of communication schools. It ranked #1 in the nation in the most recent NCA Doctoral Reputation Study in many areas of communication research (no link, but it’s on the brochure). Although the degree is granted by the College of Arts and Sciences, the major is “designed, administered, and instructed by the Annenberg School for Communication.”

While they’re on the topic of fighting over B-FLAT, they should release Communication majors from the grip of the College. I totally understand the pride that Whartonites exhibit in not wanting College students to be in any way associated with Wharton. I always try to cover up that I’m in the College, claiming I’m in Annenberg.
