“A man never trifles with gals who carry rifles.”

Lauren Friedman

members can win a glock just by walking in the door

Every morning, approximately 2.5 million women with a “voracious appetite for what’s next, new, cool, and must-have” receive a Daily Candy e-mail newsletter in their inboxes.

I possess no such appetite, but I get DC Philadelphia anyway — mainly because I derive some sort of sick pleasure from reading about clothing and spa treatments that cost more than my apartment.

So imagine my surprise when the latest Daily Candy Weekend Guide included this — smack between limited edition “cutesy” tees and a “brunch and shopping” event:

Glock Day
What: Free rentals and range time, discounted memberships, and crazy deals on Glocks — Philly’s gun of choice.
Why: It’s how Charlton Heston, God rest his soul, would’ve rolled.
When: Sat., 10 a.m.-7 p.m.
Where: Philadelphia Archery & Gun Club, 831-833 Ellsworth St.

Shoes, gruyère omelettes, sea salt facials, and… guns? One of these things is not like the others.

But this was no joke.

After the Daily Candy announcement and a front-page article in Metro, Philadelphia Will Do observed that the city seems to be coming down with some serious “Glock Day Fever.”

Someone has got to warn Jimmy Mastroddi — owner of the DP-approved South Philly venue for Glock Day — that his biggest gun day of the year might be invaded by fancy ladies with spinach-ricotta gnudi in their bellies and Jimmy Choos on their feet.

It would all be pretty amusing, actually, except that — come on, people — EVERY day is Glock Day in Philadelphia. Do we really need to set aside a holiday for that?

It’s like declaring an “I like the Red Sox” day once a year in Boston — except a little more tragic and a little less funny.

Insightful and hilarious? You’ve outdone yourself again Ms. Friedman.

Great post! And yet another reason to cross to the other side of the street when you see fancy ladies approaching. I prefer women with sneakers on their feet, pizza in their bellies, and no guns.

I had that same reaction to “glock day” in this weekend’s DC. At first I thought they meant this kind of glock :)

your observations are right on. we should next expect “maiming pitbull day” and “smoking day.”

Well said, Ms. Friedman! I do hope these well-heeled ladies will take a page from Ethel Merman’s book and learn that you can’t get a man with a gun.
