Food Weekend

Italian Market

With Parents’ Weekend close behind us, people may be wondering about what to do with their parents next year.

Nah, I’m just kidding. You have too much other stuff to be thinking about.

As a junior, I’d say this is the first time I’ve taken advantage of the designated weekend in which I am encouraged to invite my parents to my home away from home (unless you count freshman year when they came to campus and we went to Greek Lady and I showed them my room in the Quad/Fisher Fine Arts).

Oh no… This year I pulled out all of the stops, and for those of you who spent your time at FamPAN or tent shopping on Locust, hold on to your knickers.

For old time’s sake, the weekend began at Greek Lady, and from then on, Penn had absolutely nothing to do with my weekend family-and-food adventure.

I next took them to Trader Joe’s on 22nd and Market. If you like a large selection of slightly over-priced groceries, then go to Fresh Grocer. But if you like a limited selection of highly overpriced, often less flavorful but arguably healthy food, then Trader Joe’s is the place for you. Additionally, the aisle of chocolate-covered everything certainly has its appeal.

That night, what better place to bring my parents than Stephen Starr’s newest Philly restaurant, Parc, on Rittenhouse Square. The food was French, the ambience was delightful, and it was the second night in a row that I’d eaten there.

The next morning, we awoke early to head to South Philly to check out Sabrina’s Cafe, a highly acclaimed brunch place on 9th and Christian. Since there was a 40-minute wait, we spent our time browsing the Italian Market. From dish towels to asparagus to silly string, I bought it. Oh, and brunch was amazing too.

So with that, after the Phillies have silenced the Rays and before the snow starts to fall, I recommend that you get off Penn’s campus, invite your parents, and redo Parents’ Weekend better than ever.
